On Festivals, Family Reunions and the Maximum City

For most people religious festivals are nothing but pretexts for families to get together. I am part of this club.
Therefore, it's amazing that because of one small kid who had the misfortune of having his head lopped off by his Old man whom he rubbed the wrong way in order to protect his mother's modesty, I get to meet family and friends in Mumbai

Mumbai- the city of dreams. The place I call the home of my soul. The city where I feel like kal-el does when he's on Earth. The city that has everything going for it except the traffic, the crowds and the weather. But the traffic's orderly, the people are the coolest and the weather has the Mumbai monsoons on its side. Mumbai, you are family too- and boy am I glad too see you again!!

On the Festival Of Lights

Today marks Diwali, possibly  THE most important festival in the Hindu calendar. Diwali marks mythologically the slaying of Narakasura, a powerful villain who reigned unrivaled for long eons until Krishna decided to declare war on his impregnable fortress and eleven akshauhini of troops single-handedly ( or with Satyabhama as some versions note) atop Garuda that formidable steed of Vishnu. Narakasura's death at the hands of Krishna ( or Satyabhama as some versions note) came along with the boon to have his death day celebrated  for all posterity as the festival of lights and hence Naraka Chaturdsahi or the festival of lights a.k.a Diwali became a real big do in Indian tradition. Interestingly, Narakasura's defeat also resulted in Krishna's wife count swelling by 16,100 wives as a result of the fact that Narakasura had 16,100 princesses imprisoned in his castle/ fortress.

Here's a pic proving that Diwali was celebrated, if not with class and style, at least with infectious joy and enthusiasm at Mantri Tranquil ( This place is currently home for Me & Manali)

Diwali trivia apart, was having dinner at TGIF's earlier tonight and saw India decimating the English  batting line-up with some pretty impressive spin bowling and a really sharp fielding performance. Dhoni and his boys just clean whipped the pants of the English tourists and have just reignited my dormant cricket interest bug ( which had gone into extra deep hibernation mode post the very first Test in England). Also in the house was  none other than Shreesanth our mallu pace wonder / dancing reality star. Walked up to him with Saili, and shook hands with him and mentioned how awesome it was to see him there. Decent chap that he is, he agreed, and patiently (almost) smiled as Saili took a photograph with him. I'm sure he would rather have murdered me on the spot, as he vacantly looked past my shoulder at jubilant scenes of Indian victory as I clicked the pic (below) :

Finally, tomorrow marks a long expected holiday outing to that  queen of all tourist spots on offer in and around Bangalore - Wonderla! ( Whatay  name :D ) also Dad is expected to land in Bangalore late afternoon/ early evening tomorrow, and both Manali and Me look forward to that as well...

Thakumar Jhuli

Eons of Bengali youngsters have been weaned on stories from this definitive treasure trove of fantasia, which translated means "Grandmother's Bag" and we (my sister and I) were no different. For us however, more fertile memories are linked with the teller of these tales, our Thamoni (which is the nick/moniker by which we addressed our grandmother) whose bed time story telling sessions were a great hit with us.

This post is a long due tribute to one of my closest friends.

Dr. Rajlukhsmee Debee Bhattacharya was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh in 1927. She did her schooling in Mymensingh and then in Calcutta. Being a stellar student and Gold Medallist in B.A and M.A from Calcutta University (which in her times for a woman, was a real big deal!!). She later earned her doctorate from Pune University in philosophy, and taught Philosophy at IIT Kharagpur, Fergusson College, and N.Wadia College,Pune , where she retired as the HOD of the Department of Philosophy. All this while she was also a very active Bengali poet , one of the few pravasi Bengali poets of note (Pravasi being the Bengali term for non-resident Bengalis-She was based out of Pune since 1952). She was a recipient of the Prestigious Bhuban Mohini Dasi Medal from Calcutta University for her contribution to Bengali literature. She was also a noted translator of poetry from Bengali to English and English to Bengali, and had traveled abroad extensively to many conferences where she shared her expertise and experience in the finer nuances of the very difficult but very critical art of translation.

She was tremendously dynamic, phenomenally creative, inspirational,a killer cook, brilliant, open minded, youthful and refreshing to interact with but most of all she was a very loving person. When I was doing my engineering at the College of Engineering Pune (from 1999 -2003), She was my confidante and counsel. Whether it was studies related advice, or guidance on extracurriculars or generally helping me sort out personal issues, from Applied mechanics, engineering drawing and quantum physics to texture of brush strokes in the artwork of certain artistes to heated discussions on whether R.K. Narayan deserved the Nobel prize in literature or not (I thought he did, she thought not), whether "Dil Chahta hai" was really the awesome movie I though it was (She felt that despite the well portrayed urban glitz the movie ultimately lacked substance). That there was almost a 60 year difference in our ages wasn't apparent to me at most times, when it did, it struck me with a mixed sensation of awe that said i-hope-i-have-half-the-energy-she-does-when-i-get-to-her-age.

And while this post is hardly adequate to convey the loss I or indeed most members of my family felt when she passed away on a February morning three years ago, it will serve to underscore that her memory lingers on, as does her legacy.

As I was rummaging through my files the other day I saw some handwritten translations of short children's verses by Thamoni. Interestingly, the illustrations for this work in progress were done by yours truly (and therein lies the weak link) way back during the run up to my Second Semester Exams at COEP. I searched the web to see if I could trace the originals which she translated them from. The source it appears might well be a work by Shel Silverstein dating back to 1964 a work comprising of a collection of illustrated children's verse called " Dr. Shelby's Zoo". Have given below the English originals of the verses along with scanned images of Thamoni's translations. Let me just say that the translations fantastically maintain the edgy humour of the originals as well as the extremely creative names that these beasts have, those of you who can read Bengali won't have to just take my word for it, and, ahem... my illustrations don't hold up too badly either.

On Surviving a Train Blast...

Yesterday Manali and I had gone to my cousins' place at Vasai Road for lunch...after a pleasantly lazy lunch, we started from Vasai Road at about 6:00 ish to head to Goregaon and further to Inorbit, where Saili, Manali's younger sis had some shopping to do...

So we boarded a Churchgate fast and detrained to change for a slow train at Borivli...

At Borivli, we waited on platform 4 as the slow local from churchgate filtered into the platform at about 6:20...we observed as droves of people got off, and i mean thousands...luckily, we were going in the opposite direction which meant "kam bheed"...we boarded the same local as it was now a 6:21 churchgate slow local...only the local never left borivli station...a few minutes later there was an almost deafening report, and distinctly perceptible shock wave...As Manali and I were standing near the door, we promptly got off to see a huge ball of smoke emanating from the compartment right next to us....We merged into the crowd that steadily and quickly, but without panic exited Borivli station...
Let me just add that both of us escaped unhurt...by god's grace!...but in excess of a hundred people were not as lucky as us...thirty of them died on the spot...

What gets me is not that it could so easily have been us,but rather the somber cogitation that somehow these terrorists probably got the timing of the bombs wrong...As Manali and I were talking about it,had they trigerred their device a few minutes earlier they would probably have killed thousands and not hundreds...the bone chilling reality is that borivli may probably have been one of the more severe blasts but from a first hand experience of the event my gut instinct is that it was probably their intention to inflict far worse damage at borivli and that they just plain botched the timing...again thank god!!!

P.S: Mumbai as usual was back on its feet the next day...terrorists are going to have to learn the hard, humiliating and bitter reality that its easier to scare a mumbaikar(nowadays) with rains than with bombs!!......SALAAM MUMBAI!!

Manna from heaven...

Every once in a while an enigmatic post keeps my readers on their toes....

October 31, 2004

A-hem!!

On a rather embarassing note this happened to me:
My sister called me today morning and enquired whats up?...So I said "Oh the usual, whats up with you ?"..And she sort of oh-ahed and said the usual and proceeded to update me on minor tidbits of her current wherabouts and doings...and then she kind of passed the phone to my mom who finally brought it home my clod-like (or should I say dubya-like) head that it's her birthday today...I could have died there right then coz my sister never once forgets my birthday, and i always do !!
This sort of an occurence has occured to me N(n-->infinty) times with the small variation being the person involved.Sometimes it has happened multiple times with a single person( as unfortunately with my sister) Most of my friends are inured to this behavioural defect on my part because when you get right down to it they aren't really all that "remembery" types themselves so what-the-hey and life goes on...

Wise heads have told me more often than once that I'll have problems with my girlfriend to be...heck I'll settle for that problem, but later...for the moment allow to me to make public amends to my sister ...
HAPPY Birthday DIDI!!

On flaws in my writing style...

Someone, after reading my blog feedbacked me to say that I had a proclivity for long and complicated sentences( pity she didn't leave a comment on my blog ..:(...), and on reflection , it's true...my sentences tend to be super complex in grammatical terms , consisting of one or two main clauses and several subsidiary dependent/independant clauses..I guess this is a reflection of the spontaneous outflow of my thoughts..not that this is strange in the blogging community..most blogs I read adopt this style, since most blogs are extemporaneous descriptions of what is known as a state of mind..although I hope that in my case, atleast, my sentences don't get as obscure as James Joyce's (IMHO tripey/trashy) literature...

Infact , if you take a look at my blog the one thing that stands out, now that it has been pointed out to me, is the singular lack of full stops delineating one sentence from the next. I infinitely prefer the pause "..."connector...

On my lack of simple sentences and inability to paragraph, one painful incident from an English class when I was a tot, comes to mind...Here was this essay "On reading books", which, was my fave pastime even then, that I particularly considered one of my literary achievements, and that I'd submitted with a lot of pride to my English teacher expecting to get the highest marks in my class for the effort, which in those days was big deal, given that there were lots of kids better at essay writing than me in my classs...I got 0/10 on the essay..the reason?-- i still remember her exact comments..." I don't believe you've heard of the concpt of paragraphs.Wherever you have condescended to break the monotous flow of sentences, I see no paragraphs only extremely long sentences masquerading as paragraphs. The essay is good, but the style leaves me no choice!"

On a parallel note, this tendency runs in my family , my dad has preserved essay notebooks from when he was a kid at Loyola's ,Pune, and similar reprimands were recieved by my not so ancient ancestor as well....

But who cares, this is the way I wrote, I write, and will continue to!...muhahahahah!!!
